6:30 pm
over the three bunkers in a row. no problem there, body language tells us. bobby: right up the left edge. david david and actually, he got -- david: and he will have a chance to go at it, i believe. a lot of folks out here. some of them wandering. now this is the ninth hole. brett quigley, it's his 18th. ian: and at least 60 feet for his birdie. i think he'd be obviously ecstatic to hole it. two putts would be good. a good solid week for brett quigley. knock that one in to finish at 17 under, just two behind the lead of steve stricker. he has played very nicely. and there's the leaderboard. stricker by one, but he's in great position at 17. we are at the john deere classic. brandt snedeker enjoying
6:31 pm
himself, as is tim petrovic. he just needs one or two more putts. steve stricker in control. i love these shots. look at that.
6:32 pm
ian: back over at the ninth. just a reminder that some of the players finishing on the front side today. and that's a beautiful shot down from snoopy 2. metlife snoopy 2 has been cruising the skies this week, giving us a beautiful shot of the t.p.c. deere run. cruising the skies at about 1,200 feet. nothing like a shot from the blump. it looks fantastic when you get a good view down, as brett quigley finishes up with a par. nicely done. 67 this afternoon following the 62 this morning.
6:33 pm
and in a tie for third with zach johnson at 17 under. good finish. finally finding some good form again. back over to 17. david: and boy, i hope this isn't a sand wedge. you want to punch this out low. yeah, that's better looking. look at that. that is a great effort. i know it's not very close, but that's something like a 60-yard bunker shot. he played that beautifully. gave hist a chance. with the sand wedge, you would just have to take such a chance to throw it all the way to the hole. stricker walks up 17 to find his ball. he will have a look at the green. bobby: only 240 to the flag. what a long drive that was. david: it got some run, too, bobby. petrovic, short and left there in the rough, as he -- has he any kind of a chance to go? bobby: 281, so i don't think so, david. the lie is one of those that maybe a 5-wood is about as most
6:34 pm
he could get on it. david: very difficult to turn it around those trees. bobby: exactly. david: there's billy on the bag. caddied for so many good players. silly billy from philly will give him some very wise advice, i'm sure. now up at the green. ryan palmer, his third shot. ryan, 11 under par. well, all right. the flag all the way in the back right. this is going to be up. really, i think bobby's got to
6:35 pm
take even the first bunker out of play. trying to hit it past that. bobby: he's got a 190 to the bunker. i think the play is just short david: efficient, but not what he was looking for. that should be just fine. that leaves steef steve -- steve stricker with a chance really to plunge in the dagger. although he doesn't look the type. one of the nicest men you'll find out here on the pga tour.
6:36 pm
and there's a lot of them. ian: david, you would think that if he can reach, he'll go for it. just try to knock it up there at the center of the green. it's worth a go. david: it is, as long as you don't go over the back. even that front bunker isn't so much of a problem, although if you ask lee janzen, he might tell you differently. snedeker now. this will be quite an up and down. hello. 17 under par. good up and down. tied for third. birdie at the last would be worth a lot.
6:37 pm
this has been a very, very long wait for this last group. what goes through your mind? jimmy johnson is there. as you say, nick price, a very, very good player himself. jimmy, i played with him in africa a lot. a good pro. ian: it's always nice to have that extra assurance when your caddie is a good player and a calm thinker. that's all he has to do now. he's won before. he's won four times before. recently at colonial, obviously. the crowne plaza when he won in a playoff. so he knows how to handle the pressure. they'll be thinking about, as you said, david, where are the places we don't want to go? we want to get it in the middle of the green. but buried in the face of the bunker is not good. so maybe just trying to figure out what's the option?
6:38 pm
bobby: and the ball is actually sitting down a little bit, so that adds another dimension. david: ryan palmer will remain at minus 11. looks a little frustrated. everybody is a little worn out at this stage. it's been a long day. 6:45 this morning. now approaching 20 to 6:00 here central time. ian: david, this is a good thing, seeing what darron stiles does first. i think that's a good visual for steve stricker. bobby: 273 for stiles. it's a big 3-wood just to get
6:39 pm
it to the front. david: it's interesting, this his backswing. bobby: don't you love it? you can hit some beautiful golf shots, and this is one. david: just had enough to get it there, but the front of the screen will deflect anything that's not straight at the middle. bobby: he was happy with the shot. david: ok. now, our leader by one. and, bobby, you say the lie is sitting down a little bit. is it a 5-wood lie? bobby: exactly. not the kind of lie you want on 3-wood, but he doesn't need a 3-wood. it works out ok. try to let it slide a little bit. david: that's one of those areas where the water will have
6:40 pm
collected degrees the deluge that we had. just a little left. trying to play a cut shot out here somewhere right out of the middle of the green. great shot. wonderful shot. bill: he has been so solid with the lead. we'll return to the john deere classic in just a moment.
6:41 pm
bill: we're back in silvis, illinois, on the banks of the rock river. final round of the john deere classic. now stricker. let's take a look. >> great shot, strick.
6:42 pm
>> that was a good shot. david: good call from jimmy johnson right there. that's exactly what that was. just perfect. bill: he has been so calm and executing shot after shot. just has not waivered. there hasn't been much of a cushion for him. leads by one. look at this. a smile. good job. good team. the line up tonight, "60 minutes," "big brother," "cold case," and "without a trace." let's go back to 17. david: from just short of the first of the three bunkers that kind of line up in a row, the last of which is just sort of nestled into the right edge of the green. this is a difficult shotting bobby, to get back to the hole. there's going to be some spin on it. bobby: you've got to take as much spin off of it as you can.
6:43 pm
and you can't go long. that's what he's trying to do. very low. little half swing shot. very well-executed. david: stay there, stay there. bobby: that drew back a lot more than he thought it would. david: it's the pitch of the green. just back toward the bunker there. move off to 18. a sad finish for lee janzen. bill: this for par. a triple at the 17th. a tip of the cap. he got himself into contention. so that has to be a good takeaway for him. ian: it's tough when you're grinding your way back. been a tough trip for him. but he's on his way back, that's for sure. bill: 17 again. david? david: steve stricker now with a clear advantage.
6:44 pm
if he can hit a nice lag putt here, it would force tim petrovic to have to make this -- what looks like a 30-, 35-footer that no one has made all day. but in the meantime, darron stiles will have relatively simple chep and run shot. -- chip and run shot. all the green to work with there. bobby: darron plays all his golf at pine hurst. david: that doesn't make him a bad person. bobby: get to play a lot of these shots. david: yes, you do. the penalty for going over the back would be very similar right here. no rough to hold it there. shaved all the way down to the bottom. a little low check and run with the sand wedge.
6:45 pm
nicely done. very nice. a little above the hole, but a chance for a birdie. darron stiles at 14 under at the moment. and birdie here would get him into a tie for eighth. bobby: i think that would be his best finish ever on the pga tour. david: i believe it is. would tie with kevin streelman, who shot 64 today to finish 15 under. so this it would be most important putt. of the john deere so far for steve stricker, if he can lay this one up stone dead. bobby: that's something about his putting over the years.
6:46 pm
i think he's one of the best speed putters on the pga tour. got great freedom in his stroke. david: well, you don't want to get too free with this one. the only mistake would be to hoop this two or three feet past. you don't want the downhill return. a foot short of the hole for the second-best result. ian: you know, bobby, you mentioned his speed is so good, he's such a goodspeed putter. one of the stats i always look at is three-putt avoidance. steve stricker is high up in that. he's ninth in three-putt avoidance. it's a hard one to explain, but it means you've got goodspeed if you're not three-putting very often. david david it is hard to explain. i didn't even know that it existed, that one. there's a category for three-putt avoidance?
6:47 pm
ian: yeah. how often you don't three-putt. bobby: you've been on the ground too long. david: yeah. for eagle. bill: is he going to get it there? oh! you are kidding. david: i've got to tell you now, steve stricker is very relieved that that hit the right edge of the hole, because that was going a solid three or four feet past. that was what he didn't want. so while that didn't go in, he is delighted to tap that in. i can't believe he hit that putt that hard. that's a smile -- ok, didn't mean to do that. this was motoring -- yeah. that was going past -- you can
6:48 pm
see in his place there. please don't. but i'll take it. i'll take it. so must-make for petrovic. well, he got it there. that will give stricker two shots of an advantage playing the last. and that should be enough. so steve stricker at 20 under par leads by two over tim petrovic. big tie for third at 17. and the winner at colonial earlier this year, looking for number two at the john deere classic.
6:49 pm
6:50 pm
bill: tonight on cbs, the commando assigned to kill bin laden. but why was his mission stopped just short of the target? the story on "60 minutes" tonight. that's followed by "big brother," "cold case," and "without a trace," only on cbs, america's most-watched network. a moment ago at the 17th, darron stiles for birdie trying to get it to 15 under. ian: well-done. very nicely done indeed. jumps him up into that top 10. ian: and from above now, the beautiful finishing hole. a wonderful facility. home to this event since 2000. i have to tell you, stricker has been impressive.
6:51 pm
such a solid performance here in this final round. ian: he certainly has. typically, if he has any trouble at all, it's with the driver. and he'll miss it left if he hits a bad one. this is the way to play it as we watch this animated flyover. rip it down there about 280 to 290 to 300, just short of that bunker. avoid the water on the left. middle of the groan is all steve stricker wants. just there. bill: the 18th is the most difficult hole on the golf course today to a stroke average just below 4.3. ian: i mentioned if he has any trouble at all, it will go a little left. he has hit no drives left so far this week. although that's a little left of center, it's perfect. bill: got that tee pretty quickly, so was comfortable with where it was heading. trying to win for the fifth
6:52 pm
time on the pga tour in his career, the second time this year. great crowds, great galleries all week here. they were tolerant of the difficult weather conditions. they're just always so supportive of the pga tour stop here in the quad cities. been a part of the callender -- the calendar since the early 1970's. stiles. ian: he's going to have tree trouble. bobby: that's just from being tired. ian: it's a long day, bobby. you know.
6:53 pm
bobby: hard to get those legs working. bill: petrovic. he's got to be careful, because he's got a little bit of a margin to make the field. a tournament within a tournament right now. he's in the british open even if he doesn't win it. bobby: this this one straight. bill: that was a nice effort. a short time ago. up near the green. brandt snedeker. ian: laid it up short of the water. a good smart play. bill: well-done for mr. snedeker. we'll return to the john deere classic in just a moment.
6:54 pm
6:55 pm
bill: we're back. again, the lineup tonight here on cbs, "60 minutes," "big brother," "cold case," and "without a trace." the beautiful vistas from above. there's the rock river, which runs alongside the golf course here in silvis, illinois. ian: they really take care of us here. it's a great place. big crowds enjoying the weekend. ian: we want to thank everyone involved with the tournament. the folks from john deere, so much a part of the community. their chairman, his team do a great job. here's ryan palmer from the green. got it. ian: great finish. every shot counts. even more fedexcup points. long day.
6:56 pm
bill: it has been a long day. ian: the first group teed off at 6:45. bill: that's just when they teed off. they had to get out here, warm up, loosen up. it's not like they show up, pull up the car and go straight to the first tee. ian: that's right. bill: not a lot of sleep last night. hats off to the caddies as well. the players just had to go up and walk. these guys had to shoulder the heavy load. ian: that's right. in wet sneakers around 36 holes of pretty soft walking. carrying a 50-pound bag. bill: snedeker for par. ian: he's officially back in good form. fifth last week at the at&t. another top five here. bill: seems to be over the rib injury. he's actually had that problem before this year. struggled with it throughout
6:57 pm
the early part of the season. ian: any pro that's had intercostal problems or rib problems knows you never seem to get over it. they're always nagging. bill: jerry kelly has had a good week. he'll be headed to milwaukee. a midwesterner, very proud being from this part of the country. looks like one of their own is going to win it. he's back down the fairway. steve stricker, 20 under par. ian: what they do, the cheese heads? do they pour custard over everybody instead of champagne?
6:58 pm
bill: that's a good question. he's sort of a hybrid because he played his college golf at illinois. so has a lot of fans in this part of the country. he's from 180 miles away in madison, wisconsin. used to joke he went to illinois to get to the warmer weather to play golf. david: it's a 4-iron. trying to turn it right to left, good shave shot. ian: anywhere right is good. bill: just get on the right. ian: avoid the water. you see the relief if his face there. bobby: cut that very solidly, finchy. bill: he's got the two-shot cushion. that helps. by the way, if you include the match play, he's won -- this would be his fifth stroke play
6:59 pm
event, but his sixth win overall on the pga tour. ian: that's right. he won the match play title in australia. in 2001. bobby: petrovic is going with this. ian: he has to with the pressure on. bobby: no tomorrow. bobby: going left. bill: turns away. that could cost him a shot at playing in the british open. stricker comfortably ahead now.
